Abejaruco / European Bee-eater

abejaruco2Merops apiaster: Como su mismo nombre indica, se alimenta mayoritariamente de abejas. Es considerada una de las aves más bellas de Europa, por su colorido exótica y llamativo. Suele ocupar zonas en las que se encuentran taludes arenosos, barrancos, cortados de yeso, vegas fluviales. Pasa el invierno en África del Sur. Su vuelo consta de ondulaciones largas y profundas. Lo veremos cazando a gran altura.

As its name suggests, it feeds mainly on bees. It is considered one of the most beautiful birds in Europe because of its bright and exotic colours. It usually inhabits areas with sandy banks, gullies, chalk xliffs or water meadows. It spends winter in South Africa. Its flight consist of long, deep undulations. We can see it hunting at a great height.

Alcaudón real / Southern grey shrike

alcaudon2Lanius meridionalis: En Navacerrada lo podremos observar tanto en la zona de los Almochones como en zonas de transición de robledales a prados con en lindes y matorral. El abandono de la ganadería y la agricultura intensiva podría poner en peligro esta especie. Le gusta posarse en zonas altas para otear (mástiles, ramas altas). Tal y como hacen algunas pequeñas rapaces, el alcaudón es capaz de cernirse.

In Navacerrada we can see it in both the Los Almochones area and in the traditional areas between cak Woods and meadows with boundaries and scrub. The reduction in livestock farming and intensive agriculture could endanger this species. It likes to pose on high places to watch (posts, high branches). Like some small birds of prey, the shrike is able to hover.

Bisbita campestre / Tawny pipit

bisbita2Anthus campestris: La podemos encontrar tanto en zona de matorral abierto como en prados alpinos. También es una especie que podría verse afectada (su hábitat) por el abandono progresivo de la ganadería. Son aves esbeltas, que pasan mucho tiempo en el suelo. De hecho, hasta hacen el nido en el suelo, en pequeños montículos de hierba. Su colorido tiende a los ocres y marrones claros.

We can find it in both open scrub and alpine meadows. It is also a species whose habitat may be affected by the gradual reduction in livestock farming. They are slender birds that spend a lot of time on the ground. In fact, they even nest on the ground, on small mounds. Their colours tend towards ochres and pale browns.

Avión roquero / Eurasian Crag Martin

avion2Ptyonoprogne rupestris: Suele anidar en roquedos, canteras, cuevas y cavidades. Tiene un vuelo poderoso y ágil, y un repertorio de piruetas en vuelo increíbles. Cuando se encuentra a gran altura, se le puede confundir con un vencejo. Esta especie está adaptada a vivir en el aire (como golondrinas y aviones) por lo que es característico el subdesarrollo de sus patas, que suelen ser muy cortas.

It usually nests on crags or in quarries, caves and holes. It has a powerful and agile flight and a repertoire of incredible pironettes in flight. When it flies very high, it can be confused with a swift. This species is adapted to live in the air (like swallows and house martins) and, therefore, one of its characteristics is underdeveloped legs, which are very short.

Petirrojo / Europen Robin

petirrojo2Erithacus rubecula: Lo podremos observar en matorrales y zonas de bosque con abundante sotobosque. También es frecuente verle en parques y jardines, lindes con vegetación y alrededores de los prados. Es un ave pequeña, con cantos muy bonitos. Es característico su babero rojo que nos permite identificarlo rápidamente. Es un ave bastante confiada. Se alimenta de pequeños insectos y gusanos.

We can find it in scrub and wooded areas with thick undergrowth. It is also commonly seen in parks and gardens, boundary vegetation and near meadows. It is a small bird with a very attractive song. Its red breast is characteristic and allows us to identify it swiftly. It is quite a trusting bird. It feeds on small insects and worms.

Alcotán / Eurasian hobby

alcotan2Falco subbuteo: Pequeña rapaz que podemos encontrar en la zona de Los Almochones, posiblemente ocupando un nido de corneja. Caza en vuelo a insectos y pequeñas aves, con una destreza y agilidad impresionante. Es una ave que como a muchas otras les está afectando de una manera importante las modificaciones que en sus ecosistemas introduce el hombre: líneas eléctricas, caza indiscriminada, uso de plaguicidas, etc.

A small bird of prey that can find in the Los Almochones area, possibly occupying a crow´s nest. It catches insects and small birds in flight with impressive skill and agility. Like many other birds, the changes made to its ecosystem by man are affecting it significantly: electricity power lines, indiscriminate hunting, use of pesticides, etc.

Colirrojo tizón / Black Redstart

colirrojo2Phoenicurus ochruros: Como en muchas  otras especies, se le pueden reconocer tres tipos de edad si nos fijamos con su plumaje. Es característico el rojo de la parte interior de la cola, que no deja de mover insistentemente mediantes movimientos vibratorios. Anida en canchales y laderas con cantos rodados, precipicios y arbustos aislados. Es un ave de movimientos muy nerviosos. Suele posarse erguido en ramas y mástiles.

As in many other species, three age groups can be distinguished if we look at the plumage. The red on the under part of the tail, which it constantly flickers with vibrating movements is characteristic. It nests on crags and hillsides with smooth stones, precipices and isolated bushes. It is a bird with very nervous movements. It usually poses upright on branches and poles.

Pardillo común / Common Linnet

pardillo2Carduelis cannabina: Suele ocupar zonas de matorral y comunidades subarbustivas mediterráneas, en zonas soleadas poco humanizadas. Tiene el macho en verano una mancha muy característica de color rojo tanto en la frente como en el pecho, que lo hace fácilmente reconocible. Es fácil ver al macho y a la hembra a la vez, puesto que sobre todo en verano permanecen juntos casi todo el tiempo. Canta con gran maestría.

It usually inhabits scrub and Mediterranean subarbustive communities in sunny areas with little human presence. In summer, the male has very characteristic crimson patches on both the forehead and breast, which makes him easy to recognize. The male and female are often seen together, since, especially in summer, they are together almost all the time. A very masterful singer.

Brezo Blanco / Tree Heath

brezo1Erica arborea: Arbusto que no suele superar los 4m de altura, muy ramificado, presente en orlas y claros de bosque o como primera etapa de la sustitución de estos. La madera de su raíz es muy utilizada en la fabricación de pipas. Su gran resistencia a las sequías, su poder invasor, su capacidad de rebrotar, etc, hacen que juegue un papel muy importante en la formación de suelos.

A strub or tree, not usually taller than 4m, with numerous branches, present on the forest fringe or in clearings or as a first stage in the replacement of the latter. Its root wood is widely used in making smoking pipes. Its great resistance to drought, its invasive power, its capacity to put new shoots, etc. mean that it plays a very important part in soil formation.

Enebro de miera / Prickly cedar, cade juniper

enebro1Juniperus oxycedrus: Pequeño arbolillo caracterizado por su copa de forma puntiaguda y la presencia en el haz de las hojas de dos bandas longitudinales paralelas de color blanquecino. Los frutos o bayas se usan como alimento para el ganado y para la obtención de licores. Su madera tras ser destilada produce una brea oleosa denominada miera, de uso medicinal, de ahí su nombre común.

A small tree characterised by its pointed Crown and the presence of two parallel White longitudinal band son the inner Surface. The fruits or berries are used as livestock food and to obtain liqueurs. After distillation, its wood produces an oil, known as cade oil, used in medicines, giving it one of its common names.

Zarza, zarzamora / bramble, blackberry

zarzamora1Rubus sp: Con el nombre de zarza se conoce a la mayor parte de lase species de rosaceas del genero rubus. Generalmente son arbustos leñosos, de tallos arqueados trepadores y muy espinosos. Las podemos encontrar en casi cualquier parte, abundando en los bordes de caminos. La zarzamora se distingue por producir unos sabrosos frutos que son muy apreciados por su origen en postres, compotas y mermeladas.

Most rosaceae of the rubus genus are known as brambles. Generally, they are woody bushes with arched climbing canes are very thorny. We can find them almost anywhere and they are abundant on the path sides. The blackberry produces very tasty fruit that are highly appreciated when used in desserts, compotes and jams.

Jara estepa / Rock rose

jara1Cistus laurifolius: También llamada jara de laurel por la similitud de sus hojas con las del laurel. Está presente en pinares y melojares o formando matorrales de sustitución de bosques degradados, su presencia suele indicar suelos muy pobres. Se caracteriza por su corteza escamosa que se desprende en tiras, lo que la diferencia de Cistus Ladanifer. Desprende una sustancia pegajosa denominada ládano que inhibe el crecimiento de otras plantas.

With leaves similar to laurel, it is present in pine and Pyrenean oak Woods or forming scrubs that replace degraded woods. Its presence indicates very poor soil. It is characterized by its scaly bark that comes of in strips, distinguishing it from cistus Ladanifer. It gives off a sticky substance that inhibits the growth of other plants.

Majuelo – Espino Albar / Common Hawthorn

majuelo1Crataegus monogyna: Árbol de ramas espinosas y frutos revestidos de piel tierna y rojiza que encierran una pulpa dulce y una única semilla, de ahí su nombre, apareciendo raras veces dos. Lo podemos encontrar prácticamente en cualquier zona, bordeando los pinares de la Barranca e incluso como separación entre fincas. Tiene variadas aplicaciones medicinales, como prevención de enfermedades cardiacas, propiedades sedantes, remedio para enfermedades respiratorias, etc.

A tree with leaves and fruits covered by a tender reddish skin and containing a sweet pulp and singles seed which gives rise to its scientific name, although, very occasionally, two seeds may be present. We can find it in almost any area, for example, on the borders of the La Barranca pine woods, and it is also used as a separation between different properties. It has several medicinal applications, such as the prevention of heart disease and as a remedy for respiratory diseases, it has sedative effects, etc.

Tomillo común / Common thyme

tomillo2Thymus vulgaris: Pequeño matorral aromático, de hojas perennes que no suele superar los 30 cm de altura. Es abundantes en sitios secos, áridos y pedregosos, como las zonas de matorral de los Almochones. Se usa como hierba aromática en gastronomía y en la industria farmacéutica para la obtención de TIMOL, aceite esencial con propiedades medicinales en afecciones de las vías respiratorias y afecciones gastrointestinales, también se usa como vermífugo.  

A small aromatic Bush with perennial leaves that does not usually stand more than 30 cm tall. It is common in dry, arid, stony places, such as the scrub areas do los Almochones. It us used as an aromatic herb in gastronomy and, in the pharmaceutical industry, to obtain THYMOL, an essential oil with medicinal properties for respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, also used as a vermicide.

Cantueso / Topped Lavender

cantueso1Lavandula stoechas: El cantueso es un arbusto muy aromático y vistoso que forma matas amplias y densas, sus llamativas flores moradas sirven para atraer a los insectos. Se desarrolla en suelos pedregosos, secos y soleados, como es la zona de los Almochones. Tiene propiedades como antiséptico, empleándose para lavar llagas y heridas, aunque el aceite esencial, en dosis elevadas, puede resultar neurotóxico. Sus flores se usan para obtener perfumes.

Topped lavender is a very attractive aromatic Bush that forms extensive, dense thickets. Its pretty purple flowers serve to attract insects. It grows on stony, dry and sunny grounds, for example, in the Los Almochones area. It has antiseptic properties and is used to clean ulcers and wounds, although high doses of the essential oil can be neurotoxic. Its flowers are used to obtain perfumes.

Lagarto verdinegro / Schgeiber´s green lizard

lagarto-verdinegro2Lacerta schreiberi: Lagarto robusto de tamaño medio con un marcado dimorfismo sexual, el macho adquiere una coloración azul, muy intensa, en la época de celo. Especie común en bosques de pino silvestre y praderas de montaña, asociadas a ríos y arroyos. Catalogada como casi amenazada en el atlas y Libro Rojo de los Anfibios y reptiles de España.

A robust medium-sized lizard with marked sexual dimorphism. The male acquires a very intense blue colour in the mating season. The species is common in scots pine woods and mountain meadows, associated to rivers or streams. Catalogued as “near threatened” in the Atlas and Red List of Amphibians and Reptiles in Spain.

Lagarto ocelado / Ocellated Lizard

lagarto-ocelado2Timon Lepidus: Lagarto robusto, muy vistoso y de gran tamaño, que llega a superar los 700mm. Este lagarto se caracteriza por su coloración amarilla con la presencia de ocelos de color azulado y su cabeza triangular. Pueden colonizar casi cualquier tipo de hábitat. Permanece inactivo durante el invierno, aumentando su actividad con la subida de las temperaturas. Catalogado como: preocupación menor.

A large, robust and very colourful lizard, which can measure more than 700mm. this lizard is characterized by its yellow colouring, with the presence of bluish spots, and its triangular head. It can colonise almost any kind of habitat. It remains inactive during winter and its activity increases with the rise in temperatures. Category: least concern.

Culebra lisa meridional / Southern smooth snake

meridional2Coronella girondica: Ofidio de pequeño tamaño, discreto y de actividad crepuscular-nocturna, lo que la hace difícil de ver, ocupa un gran número de habitat, estando presente en prácticamente la totalidad de la península ibérica. Como método de defensa exhibe mimetismo batesiano con las víboras, cuando es capturada despende el contenido nauseabundo de sus glándulas cloacales. Categoría mundial UICN (2006): preocupación menor.

Small discreet snake which is active in the twilight and at night making difficult to see. It occupies a wide range of habitats and is present practically throughout the Iberian Peninsula. As a defence method, it uses batesian mimicry of the viper. When captured, it ejects the foul-smelling content of its anal glands. IUCN world category (20016): least concern.

Culebra de collar / Grass snake

culebra-collar2Natrix Matrix: Serpiente no venenosa, de hábitos acuáticos, aunque a menudo desarrolla su actividad fuera del agua. Los individuos jóvenes presentan un collar blanco, bordeado de negro, al que le debe su nombre común la especie, este va desapareciendo según el individuo madura. No suele morder, en caso de peligro suele erguir la parte anterior emitiendo al mismo tiempo un silbido. Catalogada como: preocupación menor.

Non-venomous snake with aquatic habits, although it is often active out of the water, Young individuals have a White collar with a black border, which is the reason for the species common name. They do not usually bite. When in danger, they usually raise their front part and, at the same time, hiss. Category: least concern.

Culebra lisa europea / Smooth snake

lisa-europea2Coronella austriaca: Culebra de pequeño tamaño, no suele superar los 50 cm de longitud. En caso de amenaza aplasta la cabeza haciendo sobresalir los ángulos mandibulares y emite un sonido silbante. Es relativamente lenta y torpe comparada con otras culebras. Posee glándulas venenosas, pero su dentición le impide inyectar el veneno en la mordedura. Especie no amenazada. Categoría: preocupación menor.

A small snake, not usually more than 50cm long. When threatened, it flattens its head, making the angles of the jaw stand out, and emits a hissing sound. It is relatively slow and clumsy in comparison with other snakes. It has venom glands but its dentition prevents it from injecting the venom when it bites. This species in not threatened. Category: least concern.

Culebra bastarda / Montpellier snake

culebra-bastarda2Malpolon monspessulanus: Es el oficio de mayor tamaño presente en la peninsula iberica y probablemente el mas abundante en la region mediterranea, llegando con facilidad a los 2m de longitude. La cabeza presenta un aspecto característico. Posee grandes ojos, sobre lkos cuales las escamas forman una protuberancia similar a una ceja. Es el colúbrido mas depredado por el águila culebrera. Estatus de conservación: preocupación menor.

It is the largest snake in the iberian península and is probably the commonest in the mediterranean región, easily reaching a length of 2m. the head is very characteristic. It has large eyes above which its scales from a protuberance similar to an eyebrow. It is the colubrid that is most heavily preyed upon by the short-toed eagle. Conservation status: lest concern.

Mariposa apolo / Apollo butterfly

mariposa2Parnassius Apollo: Mariposa, de entre 6 y 8cm, de una sola generacion. Desde finales de julio hasta comienzos de agosto, inverna como larva y forma su crisálida a finales de mayo dentro de un rudimentario capullo, que se ocualta en el suelo. La podemos encontrar entre los 700 y 3000 m de altitud, en áreas abiertas y laderas. En la sierra de Guadarrama encontramos la subespecie escalerae.

A butterfly measuring between 6 and 8cm with a single generation. From the end of july until th beginning of agust, it hibernates as a larva and forms its chrysalis at the end of may in a rudimentary pupa, which is hidden in the ground. We can find it at an altitude of between 700 and 3000m in open areas and on hillsides. In sierra de Guadarrama, we find the escalerae subspecies.

Comadreja / Weasel

comadreja2Muestela nivalis: Carnívoro pequeño y huidizo con fama de ser feroz y agresivo. Tiene un olfato y un oído muy fino. La podemos encontrar en la zona de los almochones, en las zonas de matorral bajo. Es muy voraz, y tiene un metabolismo muy elevado que la obliga a estar cazando la mayor parte del día, para compensar la pérdida de energía.

A small and elusive carnivore with the fame of being ferocious and aggressive. It has a very fine sense of smell and hearing. We can find it in the los almochones area in low scrub. It is very voracious and has a very high metabolic rate, which forces it ti spend most of the day hunting to compensate for the loss of energy.

Liebre / Iberian hare

liebre2Lepus granatensis: Liebre, pequeña, endémica de la península ibérica. Tiene preferencia por hábitat de matorral bajo pudiendo ser observada en la zona de los almochones y en la dehesa de la golondrina. Especie de caza menor muy apreciada. Gran cantidad de animales se alimentan de la liebre, como mecanismo de defensa se vale de sus agudos oídos y olfato y su capacidad para correr hasta 70 km/h.

A small hare endernic to the iberian peninsular. It prefers low scrub as its habitat and can be seen in the los almochones area and in the “dehesa de la Golondrina”. Very much appreciated as a small game species. A large number of animal feed on hares, which use their acute senses of hearing and smell and their ability to run at up to 70 km/h as defence mechanisms.
