Culebra viperina / Viperine snake

culebra-viperina2Natrix Maura: Principalmente diurna y muy acuática. Nada y bucea con gran habilidad. En caso de peligro puede adoptar aspecto y aptitudes que recuerdan a una víbora. Completamente inofensiva para los seres humanos, pues carece de veneno y de estructura inoculadora del mismo (ofidio aglifo). Cuando se siente en peligro, puede emitir un líquido maloliente. Catalogada como especie de preocupación menor.

Mainly diurnal and very aquatic. It swims and dives with great skill. When in danger, can adapt an aspect and abilities that remind one of a viper. Completely harmless to human beings since it has no venom or structure to inject it. When it feels endangered, it can eject a foul-smelling liquid. Category: least concern.

Trucha común / Brown trout

trucha2Salmo trutta: Pez de talla media, de morfología variable; requiere aguas claras, frías y bien oxigenadas, con fondos pedregosos, situándose en las Corrientes de las entradas y salidas de las pozas, rara vez se desplaza de su zona de caza. Se alimentan de materia animal fresca (peces pequeños, crustáceos y larvas de insectos). Esta especie está catalogada como vulnerable en el Libro Rojo de Vertebrados españoles.

A medium-sized fish with variable morphology, it requires clear, cold and well-oxygenated waters, with a stony bottom. It lurks in the inward and outward currents of the pool and seldom moves from its hunting area. It feeds on fresh animal matter (small fishes, crustaceans and insect larvae). The Red List of Spanish Vertebrates catalogues this species as “vulnerable”.

Carpa común / Common carp

carpa-comunCyprinus carpio: Especie de gran tamaño, llegando a 1,2m de largo y 40kg de peso; es omnívora y resiste a una gran variedad de condiciones climáticas, siendo capaz de vivir en aguas salobres con una temperatura entre 2 y 25ºC. Es considerada una amenaza para el ecosistema debido a su predilección por el sustrato vegetal de fondos poco profundos, que sirve de alimento a numerosas especies.

A large species, which can have a length of 1.2m. and weigh 40kg. It is omnivorous and resistant to a large variety of climate conditions, being able to live in saltwater at temperatures between 2 and 25ºC. It is considered a threat to the ecosystem, given its preference for the vegetable substrate of shallow waters, on which numerous species feed.

Esta especie se usa como indicador de la calidad de las aguas ya que para su reproducción requiere un sustrato limpio. Especie en declive a causa de la perdida de hábitat y la presencia de especies exóticas introducidas en su área de ocupación como el Black-Bass, Lucio, Lucio perca, siluro, etc.

Small cyprinid seldom more than 150mm long. This species is used to indicate water quality because it requires clean substrate in order to reproduce. Species in decline due to habitat loss and the presence of exotic species, such as the Black-Bass, Perch, Pike-Perch, Catfish, etc. that have introduced into the area in inhabits.

Barbo común / Barbell

barbo2Barbus bocagei: Especie endémica de la Península Ibérica de tamaño relativamente grande, conociéndose ejemplares de hasta 1m. de longitud. Lo podemos encontrar en los ríos de corriente lenta, aunque en épocas de freza realiza una migración pre-reproductiva rio arriba. Su alimentación es detritívora y bentónica, consumiendo preferentemente larvas de insectos. Es localmente abundante aunque con una tendencia regresiva, se encuentra catalogado como no amenazado.

A relatively large fish endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, which has been known to reach a length of up to 1m. we can find it in slow-running rivers, although in the spawning season, it migrates upstream before reproduction. It is a bottom-feeding fish that eats destritus and, preferably, insect larvae. It is locally common, although in decline. It is classified as not threatened.

Murciélago grande de herradura / Grater horseshoe bat

murcielago2Rhinolophus ferrumequinum: Su nombre es debido a unas estructuras membranosas que posee en torno a la nariz, con forma de herradura, y que son muy importantes en la ecolocalización. Este murciélago tiene un papel importantísimo en el control de plagas, ya que puede llegar a consumir diariamente un 1/3 de su peso en insectos. Lo podemos encontrar asociado a cursos de agua. Catalogada como especie “de interés especial”.

Its name is due to the horseshoe-shaped membranous structures it has around the nose, which are very important in echolocation. This bat plays an extremely important role in pest control, since it is able to eat 1/3 of its own weight in insects per day. We can find it associated to watercourses. Catalogued as a species “of special interest”.

Triton jaspeado / Marbled newt

triton2Triturus marmoratus: Coloniza todo tipo de ambientes acuáticos (normalmente con poca corriente) tanto permanentes como temporales. Se distingue del resto de los tritones europeos por su coloración verde. Durante la estación de cría el macho adquiere una gran cresta dorsal decorada con listas verticales blancas y negras. En el atlas y Libro rojo de los anfibios y reptiles de España, se encuentra catalogado como: preocupación menor.

It colonises all kinds of permanent or temporary aquatic enviroments (usually with little current). It can be distinguished from other European newts by its green colouring. During the breeding season, the male acquires a large dorsal crest adorned with vertical white and black stripes. In the atlas and Red List of amphibians and reptiles in Spain, it is catalogued as: least concern.

Sapillo pintojo iberico / Iberian painted frog

sapito-pintojo2Sapillo de aspecto similar a una rana, da hábitos fundamentalmente nocturnos, muy voraz, se alimenta de arácnidos, insectos…, prefiriendo zonas abiertas con abundante vegetación herbácea. Los adultos practican el canibalismo sobre ejemplares juveniles con cierta frecuencia. Especie no amenazada en España, aunque para algunas poblaciones de las islas Atlánticas gallegas, se ha propuesto asignar la categoría de “en peligro crítico de extinción”.

A small toad similar to a frog, with mainly nocturnal habits. It is very voracious, feeding on arachnids, insects, etc. it prefers open areas with abundant herbaceous vegetation. Adults fairly often practice cannibalism on juveniles. The species in not threatened in Spain, although it has been proposed to assign the category of “in critical danger of extinction” to some populations in Galician Atlantic islands.

Ranita de San Antonio / European tree frog

ranita-san-antonio2Hyla arborea: Esta ranita, de tan solo 4-5cm de longitud y actividad nocturna y crepuscular, es capaz de cambiar su color del verde hasta el pardo. Vive en territorios con agua permanente. Frecuenta preferiblemente árboles, matorrales y otras vegetaciones densas que le permitan camuflarse. Catalogada como casi amenazada en el Atlas y Libro rojo de los anfibios y reptiles de España.

This Little frog, only 4-5cm long and active in the twilight and at night, can change its color from Green to dun. It lives in territories with permanent water. It prefers to frequent trees, scrub and other dense vegetation that allows it to camouflage itself. It is catalogued as “near threatened” in the atlas and red list of the amphibians and reptiles of Spain.

Rana común / Perez´s frog

rana-comun2Rana perezi: Especie, de tamaño medio, estrictamente acuático. Ocupa todo tipo de cuerpos de agua, aunque está presente fundamentalmente en ambientes permanentes. Muestra escasos requerimientos en relación a la calidad del agua. Las ranas verdes son buenas conocedoras de su territorio y poseen una vista estupenda, lo que les permite huir rápidamente en caso de peligro. Ejemplar de gran valor culinario.

A strictly-aquatic medium-sized species. It inhabits all kind of waters, although it is basically present in permanent environment. It has few water-quality requirements. Perez´s frog knows its territory well and has wonderful sight, which allows it to flee rapidly when in danger. A species with great culinary value.

Mosquitero común / Common chiffchaff

mosquitero2Phylloscopus collybita: Es una ave muy pequeñita y esbelta. Lo podemos encontrar en sotos, bosques y vegetación arbustiva o arbórea desarrollada en las lindes de campos. Sus movimientos son rápidos y continuados, por lo que su avistamiento puede ser fugaz. Como su mismo nombre indica, se alimenta de pequeños insectos. Su canto es agradable y vistoso. Aunque esta siempre entre las ramas, anida en el suelo.

This is a very small and slender bird. We can find it in thickets, woods and boundary vegetation with bushes or trees. Its movements are swift and continuous and, therefore, the sighting may be brief. As its name suggests, it feed on small insects. Its song is pleasant and attractive. Although it is always among the branches, it nests on the ground.

Oropendola / Golden oriole

oropendula2Oriolus oriolus: Destaca el Amarillo intense del macho adulto. La podremos encontrar en formaciones arbóreas asociadas a cursos de agua, como el Arroyo del Chiquillo, en las que aparecen álamos, sauces y alisos. Pasa el invierno en el África tropical. Su nido está colgado en lo alto de las copas, mediante una horquilla que lo suspende de las ramas. Vuela rápido y majestuoso entre el follaje.

The intense yellow of the adult male stand out. We can find it in tree formations associates to waterways, such as the Arroyo de Chiquillo (chiquillo stream), where there are poplars, willows and alders. It spends the winter in tropical Africa. Its nest is hung in the treetops by means of a fork that suspends it from the branches. Swift and majestic flight among the foliage.

Mirlo acuatico / White-throated dipper

mirlo2Cinclus cinclus: Se encuentra en los tramos altos de los arroyos y ríos de montaña (con abundantes rocas) que discurren entre zonas boscosas, en los que es capaz de nadir y andar por el fondo con una increíble destreza. Con paciencia, lo podemos observar buceando por las aguas de los arroyos del Valle de la Barranca, en busca de invertebrados de los que se alimentan.

This bird is found in the high stretch of the mountain streams and rivers (with many rocks) that run through wooded areas, where it can swim and walk on the bottom with amazing skill. With patience, we can see it diving in the waters of the Barranca Valley streams in search of the invertebrates on which it feeds.

Lavandera boyera / Yellow wagtail

lavandera2Motacilla flava: Aunque suele invernar en áfrica, el resto de estaciones la podremos observar en pastizales húmedos y cerca de ríos y arroyos. No la solemos encontrar por encima de los 1.200m. anida en montículos de hierba. Es característico su amarillo chillón del macho en verano, junto con un capirote azulado. Son insectívoras y llama la atención sus continuos movimientos de la larga cola que poseen.

Although it usually spends the winter in Africa, in the rest of the season we can see it in damp pastures and close to rivers and streams. It is not usually found at an altitude of more than 1.200m. it nests on mounds of grass. The bright yellow of the male in summer, together with a bluish hood, is characteristic. These birds are insectivorous and the continual movements of their long tails are very conspicuous.

Focha común / Common coot

focha2Fulica atra: Igual que muchas otras aves acuáticas, la podremos encontrar en zonas húmedas, preferentemente en aguas abiertas y tranquilas, con vegetación abundante donde aprovecha para anidar y esconderse. La vegetación sumergida es su principal sustento, por lo que los procesos de eutrofización que afectan a las zonas húmedas de la península afectan también a su población, así como la escasez de agua en los humedales.

Like many other water birds, we can find it damp areas, preferably calm open water, with abundant vegetation where it can nest and hide. Underwater vegetation is it main substance and, therefore, the processes of eutrophisation that affect the damp areas of the peninsula also its population, as does the lake of water in the wetlands.

Somormujo lavanco / Great crested grebe

somormujo2Podiceps cristatus: Observarlo en el embalse de Navacerrada sera relativamente facil, aunque es recommendable llevar prismaticos. El macho tiene un plumaje espectacular, que en época de apareamiento luce de manera muy visible para atraes a las hembras. En la parada de cortejo, las plumas de la cabeza del macho se levantan totalmente. Suele anidar en grandes rios o embalses, entre carrizos y vegetacion asociada al agua.

This is be relatively easy to see in the Navacerrada reservoir, although it is recommendable to use binoculars. The male has spectacular plumage, which he shows off very visibly in the mating season to attract the females. In the courtship display, the male´s head feathers rise right up. It usually nests alongside large rivers or reservoirs, among reeds or other water-associated vegetation.

Ánade azulón / Mallard

anade2Anas platyrhynchos: Es uno de nuestros patos más característicos, sobre todo por el espectacular colorido del cuello del macho (la hembra suele tener un color pardo). Es el antepasado directo del pato doméstico. Ha sido tradicionalmente un animal objeto de los cazadores, por lo que conviene controlar sus poblaciones. Lo podremos observar con facilidad en nuestros embalses y canales, en los que pasa a menudo todo el año.

This is one of our most characteristic ducks, especially because of the spectacular colours of the drake´s neck (the female is usually dun-coloured). It is the direct ancestor, it is advisable to monitor its populations. We can easily see it in our reservoirs and canals, where it often the whole year.

Arraclán/Common Buckthorn

arraclan2Rhamnus frangula: Arbusto de gran tamaño, que puede llegar incluso a los 5m de altura. También llamado Avellanillo por la similitud de sus ramillas con las del Avellano. Aunque sus frutos son tóxicos, su corteza tiene propiedades medicinales, si bien debe emplearse seca, ya que verde es tóxica. Lo podemos encontrar en vaguadas, márgenes, riberas de ríos y arroyos en las zonas de altitud media de Navacerrada.

A large shrub, which may even reach a height of 5m. It is also called Alder Buckthorn because its leaves look similar to those of the alder and both shrubs grow in similar places. Although its berries are toxic, its bark has medicinal properties, although it must be used dry, since it is toxic when green. We can find it on watercourses and river and stream banks in the medium-altitude areas of Navacerrada.

Chopo negro o álamo/Black Poplar

chopo3Populus nigra: El álamo puede alcanzar los 30 m de altura, su tronco se agrieta con la edad, formándose unas características costillas de color pardo negruzco. Las semillas son diminutas y están cubiertas por una capa algodonosa que facilita su dispersión por el viento, confundida en muchas ocasiones con el polen. Se suele encontrar en zonas con suelos profundos y húmedos formado parte de la vegetación de ribera.

This poplar can reach a height of 30 m. Its trunk cracks with age, forming characteristic black-brown ridges. The seeds are tiny and covered by a cottony fluff which helps the wind to scatter them and is often confused with the pollen. It is usually found in areas with deep damp soils and forms part of riverbank vegetation.

Coruja/Annual water minerslettuce

coruja2Montia fontana:  Esta pequeña planta de carácter acuático, la podemos encontrar en fuentes, bordes de ríos, arroyos y zonas encharcadas de aguas finas, pobres en calcio y bien soleadas. La coruja es un buen indicador de la calidad de agua y con un gran valor culinario en nuestra zona, la forma de preparación tradicional es en ensalada. También  se la conoce como boruja, pamplina, marusa y puntilla.

We can find this small aquatic plant in fountains, river banks, streams and flooded areas of fine waters low in calcium and with a lot of sun. The Annual Water Minerslettuce is a good indicator of water quality and is of great culinary value in our area. The traditional form of serving it is in salad. It is also known as Water Blinks.

Fresno/Ash

fresno2Fraxinus angustifolia:  Árbol de tamaño medio aunque puede alcanzar los 25 m de altura. Debido a la alta flexibilidad y resistencia de su madera se ha usado tradicionalmente para la construcción de herramientas y raquetas de tenis. Se encuentra en riveras de arroyos y vaguadas de montaña. En Navacerrada lo podemos ver en las zonas cercanas al embalse. Se encuentra catalogado como Sensible a la alteración de su hábitat.

A medium-sized tree, although it can reach a height of 25 m. Because it is very flexible and resistant, its wood has been traditionally used for making tools and tennis racquets. It is found on mountain stream banks and watercourses. In Navacerrada, we can see it in the areas close the reservoir. It is classified as “sensitive to habitat changes”.

Olmo/Field Elm

olmo3Ulmus minor:  Árbol robusto de crecimiento relativamente rápido, usado antiguamente para la construcción. Con aplicaciones medicinales, muy utilizado en medicina homeopática para  dolores de las articulaciones de manos y pies. Hoy, muchos de estos ejemplares han muerto por la enfermedad conocida como “grafiosis”, producida por el hongo Ceratocystis ulmi, lo que ha supuesto una disminución considerable de sus poblaciones. Catalogado como Vulnerable por la UICN.

A robust and relatively quick-growing tree formerly used for building purposes. It has medicinal uses and is widely used in homeopathic medicine for pain in hand and foot joints. Today, many of these trees have died of the diseases known as “graphiosis”, caused by the fungus Ceratocystis Ulmi, which has led to a considerable decrease in the population. Catalogued as “vulnerable” by the IUCN.

Sauce/Willow

sauce3Salix sp.: Especie de ribera, se suele encontrar cercano al curso de un río o embalse o en zonas de suelos húmedos y frescos. Las especies de sauce son difíciles de catalogar, ya que sus diferencias principales se encuentran en los amentos, no siempre presentes. Otro inconveniente es la facilidad con la que híbrida creándose ejemplares intermedios. En Navacerrada podemos encontrar Salix atrocinerea, Salix alba, salix nigra.

A riverbank species, it is usually found near rivers or reservoirs or in areas with damp cool soil. It is difficult to catalogue the different species of Willow, since the main differences are to be found in the catkins, which are not always present. Another difficulty is the ease with which it cross-fertilises, forming hybrid trees. In Navacerrada, we can find Salix atrocinerea, Salix alba, salix nigra.
